I tried to get into them, too, but it just didn't do anything for me. I went to 3 shows in the 90's and walked out every time feeling like I threw my money away. It's all just a matter of taste, I guess. To each his own....

Senseless noodling, silly lyrics....can you say Zappa?,<edit> AND I love Zappa! which was the first thing I thought of when my nephew played the first Phish CD for me. I was never thinking of any connection to the Grateful Dead who I began listening to in the early 70's via my older brothers and first saw in 79 and there on after. I look at some of the originals like Santana and I compare him to my 1st show when I saw him in 77 and say, what the heck happened to him? He is out there dancing dressed in riduclous suits. I want the old t-shirt, scraggily beard, Gibson or Yamaha SG and loud ass solos!
Last time I saw him was in Hartford about 7 years ago and walked out before the 1st set was over.
Sorry just venting a little cause my favorite band will never be what it once was.
Personally, I like Phish, not so much to see their shows - I have seen them a few times. They still play loud, the noodling when it is on, can be really fulfilling to me. I never listened to lyrics myself, it was always about where the solo was going to take me. Then I worked my way back through the rest of the band and listened each of them.
Just my 2 cents

Personally I love Phish. I certainly wouldn't put them on the level of the GD but they are absolutely amazing musicians. Their jams, while sometimes seeming to be going nowhere, can be unlike anything that I have seen the GD do. They are far more exploratory than anything that the gd did after the early 70's and while they may not have always been successful when it worked it was mind blowing. Sure being under the influence helped---but that is what I was into at the time and it certainly took me where I had never been before.

Sure, some of the songs are silly and pointless but they were having fun and their fans certainly had fun. And the lyrics weren't the point. The places the music took us is what mattered. No it isn't for everybody, but neither is the GD. My wife still can't sit through a Viola Lee Blues and I still love her. On the same note, I won't hold it against you if you aren't a fan of Slave the the Traffic Light.

I am so grateful to have been able to see the almost 100 Phish shows and they are absolutely some of the craziest music experiences that I have ever witnessed. I listen to their shows regularly but it isn't the same as seeing them live. As well, they are all wonderful people that I was lucky enough to at one point call them friends. I've given up trying to convince people of their musical talents but I respect them and their talents and always will.

I think I first started to listen to them myself around '89/'90 I believe. They were alright and friends talked me into going to see them a few times in '91 and '92 (when they opened for Carlos Santana!). They were alright and had good times at the shows but really the music was never the main draw for me, it was merely the fact I was with my friends & family really. After that year my friends kept giving me tapes but I never went to any other shows again even when they tried to bribe me with free tickets. My friends tried many times and kept giving me tapes of "killer" shows to try and persuade me all the time but I never went again.

My future brother-in-law (hopefully) is trying to get me to go to one of the Philly shows in Novemeber as he is really into them. I told him if he has an extra ticket and he doesn't know anyone else who would really want it I would go. I am thinking he feels he might owe me as I talked him into seeing RatDog at the Tower on 10/16 and on 12/13 we are going to see Furthur in Asbury Park ;-)
